Conservatives Brace for Health Care Push in State Legislatures

The good folks over at the Bell Policy Center out here in Denver has set up a new blog to discuss the upcoming push for health care reform in Colorado. It's a smart idea, because such a big issue needs a lot of discussion. As you can see from the comments, right out of the gate, Rep. Morgan Carroll (D-Aurora) is swinging away at some of the more draconian proposals floating around out there.

Despite some navel gazers and naysayers in Washington, D.C. saying states should just shut up and keep quiet on health care, many states are moving forward aggressively to expand health care. Not surprisingly, the progressive leaders pushing for health care reform are running into opposition from hysterical conservative lawmakers and their health/drug industry financiers (check out how I'm getting attacked by Wisconsin and a Tennessee legislator for my work with the Progressive States Network pushing universal health care at the state level).

These right-wing convulsions are now starting to happen here in Colorado. Just today, the Colorado Republican Business Coalition held a luncheon to launch a red-baiting attack Gov. Bill Ritter's Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Care Reform - before the commission has even submitted its final recommendations.

Stay tuned - this is going to be a pretty big fight in the upcoming Colorado legislative session, and in legislative sessions all over the country.

CO, WI, and TN are lucky to get anywhere. It's a hell of a long shot out here in NE though I'm guessing it's because of the federal aid being given to the elitists and pork barral hacks in the state by the DC motherfuckers that's keeping it that way. Where's the Justice League when you need them?

I don't see it happening in CA anytime soon. Because even if we had some form of Univsersal care, we don't have anywhere near enough clinics, hospitals and nurses to take care of patients.

Our hospitals are generally maxed out on any given day, we're short nurses and clinics a lot of people refuse to use them. Instead a lot of poorer folk just make a beeline to the nearest hospital ER for every problem.

Oh and the HMO outpatient facilities - they are so oversubscribed as to be major pain in the asses for anyone to use. Kaiser used to be good but they are cheap as hell on expanding and instead like to oversubscribe their facilities so as to discourage people from using them.

What I'm seeing in California is that the big players in private insurance (Kaiser, the Blues) and Schwarzenegger are yelling "universal coverage" at the tops of their lungs, and hoping nobody says "single payer."

Some really, really smarmy press releases on this from the likes of Bruce Bodaken at Blue Shield and George Halvorsen at Kaiser. The progressive voices need to draw the distinction between genuine reform and "same pigs, bigger trough."
