Retail execs hit paydirt while they shaft their workers
Executives, economist and other corporate apologists often justify low wages at places like Wal-Mart by telling us that's just a fact of life in the retail industry, which we are led to believe subsists on tiny profit margins. That justification might hold some water, except when you read a story like this one in the New York Times about how executive pay in the retail industry is skyrocketing. It should be hard for these same executives to continue arguing that retail workers' wages should be low after a story like this - but rest assured, we'll keep hearing the propaganda as long as it creates political cover for CEOs to rip their employees off.
