Back from Fishing
Just got back from a much-needed two-day mini-break. I went fly fishing on the Arkansas River. Caught two beautiful brown trout, which made the trip all the more fun.

Recognizing the Race Chasm
The issue of race makes a lot of folks uncomfortable - and that's especially true right now when the nation is closer than ever to electing the first black President of the United States. As my new newspaper column this week shows, many Serious People who dominate our political debate have reacted to this historic election and their own queasiness about race by exposing their prejudices.

Clinton's Final Strategy: White Power?
Hillary Clinton seems to be trumpeting an unvarnished white power message in the last throes of this campaign. I'll be touching more on this in my column out tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Labor-Enviro Alliance
The labor movement and the environmental movement have, at times, clashed over the conflict between protecting jobs and protecting the environment. So it is good to read this story in the Politico, which suggests a unified way forward for two key wings of the progressive movement.

So Much for Promises, Huh?
Here's the Politico today:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is about to lead her party into a major showdown over Iraq funding by violating two Democratic campaign pledges in one fell swoop...This week's maneuvering over a $200 billion war spending bill has revealed Pelosi self-confidently playing what she believes -- with increasing evidence -- is a strong hand. Strong enough that she is expected to break one promise -- her 2006 pledge for a more open and inclusive committee process -- by circumventing the powerful House Appropriations Committee on the Iraq bill. And when the final Iraq bill reaches the president's desk, any troop withdrawal conditions are likely to be gone from the legislation. That is another 2006 pledge that has fallen by the wayside.
What a way to build trust, huh?

Radical Industry Executives
Here's a dispatch from the Missoulian:
HELENA - Former U. S. Rep. Ron Marlenee and state Rep. John Sinrud have formed an election-year issue advocacy group to promote the use of Montana's natural resources, protect property rights and stop "radical environmentalists." The two Bozeman Republicans have launched Western Tradition Partnership and are soliciting money and memberships from industry and business executives.
I've always found it odd that people who want to protect the environment and the ecosystem are branded as "radical," while industry and business executives destroying the environment are just called "industry and business executives." Isn't it radical to destroy the very ecosystem humans need to survive?
