Tell the Power Companies: Invest In Clean Power, Not Coal

Major power companies and their supporters in Washington are telling Americans that coal is the future of affordable energy. But acid rain, increased greenhouse gas emissions, dangerous coal mining, mercury pollution, increased asthma and human health problems, and serious groundwater pollution are costs that no one can afford. There simply is no such thing as "clean coal."

Investments made in new facilities today will lock in our energy sources for decades to come. Power companies such as Peabody, Dominion and others need to pay attention to their shareholders who are looking to the future. They need to get out of the coal business, and shift the billions of dollars they are spending on coal into green and renewable energy like solar and wind, as well as energy efficiency.

Early in 2009, Dynegy, a major power company, agreed to pull out of building coal-fired power plants in the United States -- and their stock responded quickly with a 19% jump in one day.
