Who Lost Georgia?
I tend to think that Georgia, as an independent, pro-Western nation was doomed when the European Union and the United States recognized the independence of Kosovo over the vehement objections of Russa. Russia had no military leverage, but a price would eventually be extracted, and Georgia is that price.
The current conflict between Russia and Georgia is a treasure trove of strategic and tactical notes. Just a few to demonstrate that the mainstream press is once again doing a bad job of explaining reality to the American people:
1. If Georgia's bid to become a member of NATO had been accepted, would NATO forces be massing now?
2. Is McCain's testosterone laden response related to the lobbying contract with Georgia of his primary foreign policy advisor?
3. why is Israel training the Georgian military?
4. what other superpower invaded a sovereign country in recent years over the objections of most of the world?
5. who benefited and who lost from the construction of the oil pipeline through Georgia to Turkey, designed to circumvent Russian territory?Sometimes world politics have no good outcome, and the situation in Georgia is likely to be one such case. I have the deepest sympathies for the people of Georgia.
Discussion
This is a big story that i have been anticipating for almost a year and it is a shame that the mainstream media tend to reduce it to something very simple which it is not.
Given the facts above, the Russian reaction should have been long telegraphed, but the question we might want to ask ourselves is "if we were in the Russian position what would we do?". I dont think we need to go too far back in history for an answer.
