Only a year to go!
[update 2/1/08: Note that the widget doesn't work in Facebook or MySpace, much as we'd love it to. If you know how to build these sorts of things and want to help us make one for those sites, definitely let me know. Also -- any interest in a Mac dashboard version?]
As we approach the one year mark, the Bush Countdown widget grows more satisfying every day. Most nightmares don't let you know when they'll be over. Conveniently, this one has a specific end date. You can keep track of it by visiting this site where we prominently feature it on the upper-right corner of every single page. Or you can add it to your own site using the HTML below:
Update 1/18/08: I've updated the code above based on some suggestions below.
Also, here's a version that works in blogger/blogspot:
Neither of these work in MySpace, unfortunately, but we're working on one that will.
[2/8/08 Another update: Here's a link to the iGoogle version of the Bush Countdown.]
Discussion
have not been able to make widget work in either myspace or on blogspot so far... am cutting and pasting code. am i doing something wrong?
I'm also seeing an error when I try to use this code.
The error message is saying "object expected" somewhere around the point in the code that says "WriteBushCountdown()"
one problem is http://credoaction.com/widgets/widgets.js throws a 404. makes it difficult to run anything ...
also blogspot apparently doesn't allow your stylesheet in its html/javascript inserts ...
The copy - paste code has a typo. "widgets.js" should be the singular "widget.js"
Don't think its ready for prime time, does not work on myspace L
Sorry about that, folks. Adam here from the CREDO Action politics team. Mittineague had it right -- we added an extra 's' in the URL. Should be fixed and working now. Although a warning that MySpace blocks JavaScript embeds, so it likely won't work there.
i am trying to put this on my d-list page and it keeps telling me that i need some sort of current version of l.14 or something. this thing would be cool to add, but it is obviously not easy.
Hi, Ben at CREDO here. My apologies to everyone who had trouble before we fixed the typo. It should work now, but sadly not on MySpace yet. As Adam mentioned, MySpace doesn't allow embedded javascript. Nor do they allow iframes -- which this also uses. This evening I've been checking out the specs for developing on MySpace; we'll get one together soon, so MySpace users can enjoy the countdown along with everyone else.
hello
the idea is good, but i agree with john & robert:
if bush will end his mandate in november ( effectively, something could happen or be organized, but it must not necessaryly be on american ground ),
this will NOT mean something better ( look someone like McCAin seems to me worse, but some others could be forced too the same politics )by whom? i've got some answers, search, ask and be surprized !
nb: my american is very bad

I've attempted to post both on Facebook as well, with no results but the same code on my profile with the first initial pieces to the code turned into "...". I don't know anything about codes, html or java, so I'm not certain what that means. You should probably look into it though, since this cool widget has turned out to be a P.R. flop. I'll keep checking back to see if theres been progress.
I also find I can't use the existing widgets. The primary reason is they don't open a new window and I can't place them on most sites unless they open ONLY in a new tab or window. The code requires the "target=_new" to be used.
This is especially true in sites using any frames because the new page will open in a frame and often not fit etc.
I need a widget to open a new target window to be able to use it.
The widget doesn't work in Facebook or on MySpace.
We did start building a version for those sites, but it's going super slowly, and I would say is pretty much stalled out at the moment. (Plus lately, there's been a lot of other things going on here in the Politics Department -- FISA, in particular.)
If anyone is interested in helping us develop it for those sites, let me know.
Paul: The opening in a new window issue is a little trickier than simply adding target=_new as it uses javascript to go to the new URL. But if I get a chance, I'll test having it open in a new window. I think it's a good idea for the reasons you mentioned.
