Who Uses Postage Anymore?
...well, actually, independent media still uses postage -- which makes the proposed rate hikes for publications like The Nation potentially devastating.
And not just progressive media -- there is a truly amusing list of odd-bedfellows that make up the coalition to stop this hike.
Navasky and Hollingsworth will be representing a coalition of publications -- which also includes The National Review, Mother Jones, The Weekly Standard and Ms. -- that faces rate increases of as much as 20-30 percent. The hike will cost these publications hundreds of thousands of dollars, forcing the magazines to make significant cutbacks or even go out of business.
Remember the last time Mother Jones and The Weekly Standard teamed up? Neither do I.
This is an issue that Working Assets took action on months ago, and we're happy to know that a Congressional sub-committee is looking into it. We're also proud that Free Press, one of the organizations that receives support from Working Assets members, is taking the lead:
"These unjust rate hikes go against more than 200 years of postal policy," said Ben Scott, policy director of Free Press. "Our founders understood that a diversity of political speech and opinion was essential to the robust political debate that sustains our democracy. That debate has never been more important than it is today. Congress should act swiftly to restore fairness to the system and protect these vital publications."
Not all good ideas live on the internet...let's keep the ideas flowing as freely as possible.
Discussion
As an officer for a local organization, I can tell you that there's a lot of people who don't use email.
Some of them even use computers at work, but tell me that "I use a computer all day, I certainly don't want to look at one after I get home."
We are still having to send out newsletters and announcements by mail for about half our members.
The raise in mailing costs can hurt service groups, special interest organizations, including political organizations, and many clubs.
Umm. I do. As I've seen all too often, crashing is only one of the many tricks computers can perform to cause disaster, mayhem, and frustration. Also, I have some distrust that somewhere, someday, someone will be able to divert my computer generated payment. Therefore, I either deliver my payment in person or I put it in an envelope, slap a stamp on it, and drop it in the nearest and most convenient mailbox.

Speaking of computer tricks, it kept giving me an error message.
Speaking of computers, when is Workingforchange going to get it's server fixed so we don't have these delays and goofy error messages in posting. I've tried posting from both my computers on two different servers and keep getting the same crap.
There's a reason people don't trust email.
